Inspired by the enduring forms of ancient Roman amphorae, this hand-built stoneware vessel reinterprets the traditional silhouette through a contemporary sculptural language. Its rounded body, tapered point and short asymmetrical neck give the piece an organic presence while retaining a subtle connection to its historical source.
The vessel was individually formed and sculpted by hand, then finished with a layered combination of handmade, non-commercial glazes. The glazes were applied using both brushwork and immersion, creating a complex surface of muted sage green, smoky gray, soft turquoise and earthen rust tones.
Fired twice in a gas kiln with soda ash, the atmospheric firing produced natural variations in color, texture, speckling and glaze movement. These unpredictable effects are unique to the firing process and form an integral part of the work.
The piece is both sculptural and functional and may be displayed as an original ceramic object or used as a vase.
